The unexpected cost of sleeping in



I have been on holiday recently and the temptation is always there to lounge in bed for far longer than I would on any normal day.   I did indulge my sloth for a while but after a few days I began to notice a number of problems caused by sleeping too long.

Problems with sleeping in:

1) When I finally got up my back and neck were stiff and sore

2) It took a lot longer to get into gear to go out or do anything at all for the rest of the day

3) The dog missed out on her morning walk and made me feel guilty just by looking at me

4) I didn’t do my stretches and suffered with my sore back for the rest of the day

5) I missed out on the quiet time I usually enjoy before the family get out of bed

6) Breakfast became more like lunch and I didn’t eat my normally healthy meal

7) A lot of the little tasks such as tidying the house seemed to become enormous chores that I simply did not have the energy to complete

8) If there was an appointment, I was rushing just to get there on time

9) I stayed up much later than normal in the evening and filled that awake time mindlessly watching rubbish shows on television

10) I felt the loss of the mental space that quiet time in the morning gives me

It got to the point where I felt as if I was wasting my holiday.  I didn’t go out and do fun things with the children, my to-do list stayed undone and the days simply seemed to go by as if we were marking time until the children were due to go back to school.  Certainly not the way I had planned to spend their holidays.

I made a decision to go back to my usual morning routine and discovered that not only was it great for getting me set for my days at work, it was also fantastic for getting me set for my days at home.   Definitely something I will be remembering for future occasions.

  1. this sounds like me… If I don’t get up as normal I will literally do nothing all day.. but my problem is, that I AM slightly lazy lol.. so I have to try and make plans during the holidays to try and get some sort of routine. I can always lie in on sundays hehe #binkylinky

    1. Yes, I agree. It’s getting out of the regular routine that really throws me. I am an achievement driven person and I hate feeling like I have wasted the day.

  2. Getting a cappuccino is the best thing that gets me up and out the door super fast. I agree sleeping in seems wonderful but being behind the 8 ball all day is so annoying

  3. I completely agree! I enjoy a ‘lie-in’ once in a while however on those days I do, I feel like I have less time in the day, less things done, the day flashes by in a minute and the generally leave me feeling guilty for not doing more! I love nothing better than having a productive morning and feeling like its been a good day!! 🙂

  5. This is me, on a regular basis, and I agree. Which is one of the reasons I’m trying to tackle it (I’ve just shared my post from the flip side – late nights – today) – it is so hard to change a bad pattern (which is late night / late mornings), but for the reasons you’ve stated plus more, it’s really important.

  6. I definitely agree with you on this Jen. I feel much better when i get up at my normal time. After sleeping in a few mornings this week I got up early today to go to parkrun and I felt fabulous getting up early and starting my day with some exercise. I plan on setting my alarm again and seeing how productive I can be after a week of pretty much nothing!

    1. My productivity also is greatly improved when I get out and about in the morning. It just seems to set the stage for a positive day.

  7. We’ve found the same; attempts to catch up on sleep in the morning send the day out of kilter, our daughter gets tired and grumpy before we get out of the house and everything gets messy. Best to crack on and make the most of the day. #binkylinky

  9. I have felt the same way this school holiday. I have let things pile up that should have taken minutes. I did a big blast yesterday and am doing the little bits and pieces today to finish off and get me in a good place before our school goes back tomorrow.

    1. It’s so easy to do isn’t it? We let it happen and then wonder what on earth we were thinking.
