The risk of wanting everything achieved yesterday

One of the biggest hurdles to making any changes in life often comes down to our own expectations.  We have a desire to change in some way and launch ourselves into doing what is required.  Nothing in life ever goes smoothly however and when the inevitable hurdle or obstacle comes our way we don’t always manage ourselves very well.  We have the expectation that we are going to be able to do a certain thing and when we come across some sort of stumbling block or the change is not happening as quickly as we would have liked, we tend to decide that it is all too hard and give up.

It is important to accept that any change worth making will take a considerable amount of time and effort.  Without this expectation from the start, we are setting ourselves up for failure.  We must give ourselves permission to make changes in our lives slowly.  It is often necessary to try something, review our progress, modify the plan and then try again.  It is only through this continual process that long lasting change will occur.  The challenge of course is to have a clear vision of the goal and enjoy the process enough that we continue to work towards it even through the tough times.

Some strategies that might assist when the going gets tough:

1) Realise that you can’t have it all achieved straight away.  Change is a process and will take time.

2) Choose to look at setbacks as learning tools rather than as failures. Learn from your experiences, decide what changes need to be made, make them and move forwards with the plan.

4) Celebrate the small successes as well as the large ones. 

Sometimes the breakthrough you were looking for is just around the corner.  Don’t give up just before you reach it.
