Declutter Your Home: Create a Sanctuary to Enjoy 1

This post forms part of my 101 Decluttering Series.

When you are at the beginning of the journey to declutter your home, it can seem like a huge mountain to climb. You look around and see all of the clutter on the counter tops, the piles on the floor and the junk falling out of the cupboards. It can seem overwhelming and you wonder how you will ever tackle it.

Where to start to declutter your home

The best place to begin is to identify a room in your home which will be your sanctuary: A spot where you can go to recharge and escape the worries of life for a short time. This might be your bedroom, a spare room or even the family/games area or kitchen.

This is the space you enjoy spending time in. It is where you are able to unwind and de-stress at the end of a busy day so that you can recharge your batteries. Only you will know which room is best for you.

It is important to think carefully about which room you will choose because this is where you will focus 100% of your energy in order to declutter your home and life. The goal will be to have this room decluttered, neat and tidy before moving on to decluttering any other space.

Once you have chosen the room that will be your sanctuary zone, focus all of your attention on to this space until the work is done.

Tips to declutter your home sanctuary room

  • Look at the room through a stranger’s eyes. Get rid of any item that is out of place.
  • Remove all ‘work’ items from the room.
  • Complete a ’15 in 15′ quick sweep. Grab a bag and quickly throw 15 clutter items into it for disposal. Take no longer than 15 minutes.
  • Grab all items that belong in other parts of the home. Return them to their correct locations.
  • Completely clear the floor of everything except furniture legs.
  • Remove as much from the surfaces of the furniture as possible.

How to declutter your home fast

There are different ways to think about how to declutter your house fast.

1. Have the whole house decluttered within a short period of time.

This decluttering strategy involves being very strategic and particularly ruthless in the way you declutter and organize your home. In order to declutter quickly, you will need to be able to make decisions about what to keep and what to toss and not spend any time agonizing about each small item. Make a decision about whether to keep it or toss it and then move on to the next item.

2. Spend only small amounts of time decluttering your home.

This decluttering strategy allows you to organize and declutter your home consistently in small stages over the course of a number of weeks or even months. While this might sound like a long drawn-out process, the small amounts of time spent ensure that there is still plenty of time to complete the other important tasks required throughout your day.

I recommend that you declutter your home in 15 minutes a day.

Do this regularly and consistently and you will be less likely to give up and more likely to keep the spaces decluttered in the future.
